Last January when our son was home from Iraq (he’s a Marine), we talked about a couple of knitting board sites. We discussed this site… Let’s Make a Knitting Board and the possibilities of making this knitting board. I think this is a wonderful idea and I love the idea of the hold stops on each side for the thread to help maintain tension as you turn your board.
Last week when he was here again, he said he had once again thought about making this board, but with all he had to do he decided to buy one instead. So he bought the 28″ one found here. He said he has had little time to use it, but has managed about a 6″ long piece. As a suggestion, he also said that when initially casting on, instead of using a heavy thread to place across the stitches to assist pulling down the first few rows… use a very small dowel rod with thread attached to the ends and center. He said this helps keep the tension balanced and the stitches even on those first rows.
Have a look…..
A Marine who knits! Tell him I learned to quilt from an X-Marine who played under the quilt frame as a boy (my dad). Mom took Dad to the Marine Corps League Memorial Day gathering–he was the only WW2 vet there, and when the guys heard he was an Iwo survivor they all came up to shake his hand and some even wanted a photo with him. Made him feel like a million dollars!
