Crochet and Crazy Quilt

I find myself with LOTS of crochet thread.  The thought ran through my mind the other day to try that thing I’ve always thought about… crochet a table cloth.  So… out came all the pattern books…patiently went through each one… 5 times.  I picked up the #7 hook and some white thread and tried out one of the squares for a lovely table cloth and immediately pulled it out.  Using same hook I went back to the tried and true, trusted doily book and voila’….  we have a doily.   I realized that it would be a very easy crochet to do the table cloth.. and then I realized that I have about 14 projects already started.   So.. against my impulsive desires .. I put the idea on the back burner for a while and pulled out…

My crazy quilt that I started last year and have not touched since I put it down during the holidays.  I know this will be a long-term project, so I decided to finish this before I start another one.

Have I told you about this quilt?  I decided that this quilt will be a memory quilt of our yard and the time that we have lived here.   Leaves were picked from every tree.  I spread acrylic paint in several colors across the back of the leaves and then pressed them in different areas on the quilt.  Pieces of the fabric are from drapery valances.

Then I found some bird appliques at JoAnn’s and some butterflies that came off a little doo dad that I’ve had for about 15 years or so to show the kinds of birds and butterflies.   The needle tatting was learned while living here so I’ve put several pieces of that on it.  There will be embroidery of things of importance that have happened here… knowing full well going in that it will be impossible to put everything on it.  But it will be fun and a good journal anyway.. ;o)

Hurricane Hermine made an appearance here yesterday and the night before.  Hwy 75 was blocked for 6 hours last night because an electricity pole was pushed over onto a truck during a tornado/downburst about 3pm yesterday.  I can’t even imagine a 6 hour traffic jam… ughh  We continued under a tornado watch until 1 am, but I’m afraid I was spending most of the night up and down feeling rather poorly … so that watch went unheeded for the most part.   Today the sun is shining and I haven’t checked the radar to see what’s up for today.  We really needed the rain, but the flooding downtown always causes some to have to be rescued… as was the case yesterday.  But as long as no one is injured… all’s good.

Have a good day today… smile lots and get a lot of smiles in return… ;o)

Naalbinding… New Video Tutorials

I am in heaven… There are 11 new videos showing how to make different stitches, different ways of starting your work for spirals, some for squares… all wonderful.   Here is one of my favorites since I have had a lot of trouble with the spiral start for the Mammen stitch.   Mammen Stitch Spiral Start..  If you look in the right side column there is a list of several other new videos.  And… if you speak English… each video has a place to click that will bring up the English instructions as written directions on the video.

And… even better than that… I am going to meet personally… ta da… Alix Tiberga … whose page here… showed me just how lovely some of the patterns for nalbinding can be.  I have never seen such lovely work as hers.  I can hardly wait… ;o)

I’m Back… With Good Quilting News! (free patterns and tute)

Whew! The holidays are over once again and we are not only into a new year but whole new Decade! How did that happen so fast?

During this period when I have been gone I haven’t just been holiday-ing… ;o) I finished my first queen sized quilt. Love that.   I quilted this on my machine and since it’s my first I will forgive myself the pucker….  You can bet this won’t be the last quilt I do… I am now hooked.

Years ago my mom made all of her grandchildren quilts.  They were a good lap sized quilt and she didn’t quilt them. A couple of us girls got together with her and we all worked together and tied them.  I was thinking of that this morning when I came across this site…

Mary’s Quilts.com … She had many scrappy quilt patterns on her site and this page with instructions (tute) for how to tie your quilts.

I hope your holidays were good.  Mine were great.  Some of the children and grandchildren came home and one of the grandsons married over Christmas holidays.  What a wonderful celebration!  A great way to end a year and begin another one….

Binding a Book… free tutorial

Pg2_3inA few years ago I decided to put together my own book…. just for fun.  It was very easy and took very little time.  Now I am thinking about making some for Christmas…

Here is a quick and easy tute … this is not the one I used for this book.. but is much easier and quicker…  Could be used to tell family stories, pictures, novels, bind the kids finger painting, make a sewing journal, family recipe book… and on and on…

Please Get Permission….

I have put several free patterns that were created by me  up on this site.  They were uploaded with the thought in mind that others j0210200might like to use them.  If they are  used  for personal use… that’s great.  If they are  used  to sell the products ..well… I hope  millions are made,  all the kids are sent to college and that 4th house in Tuscany is available to be bought.  The fact is that those patterns were done easily by me.  I did not have to take a lot of notes, work out all the sizes and combinations that would work for everyone in the universe.

I put links up to many free patterns.  I do this because I feel that if I enjoy these patterns then my readers will probably enjoy them also.  I have blogged about this before….. These patterns are put out there for our enjoyment.  Some of them are copyrighted.  Some may not be formally copyrighted, but there is such thing as Creative Commons.   If a person feels that they want to use a pattern for profit of any kind…. PLEASE BE SURE TO GET PERMISSION FROM THE CREATOR!   Just because there is  a link to a pattern or a site and the word “free” is used does not mean that it is free for commercial manufacture.  The owner of this site cannot give you permission to use the pattern for profit.  Only the creator can do that.

It is too sad that the reason for this post is misuse of one of the most popular patterns that is linked to here on Fabric Follies Two.

More Tablet Weaving… Michael Cook in Spin Off

TabletWeavingDiamondsThis 8 feet of diamond pattern tablet weaving was turned into a leash…but is way too heavy for the little 6 pound beauty that I had in mind!

My fascination with this kind of weaving grows with each new pattern that I try.  Michael Cook of the Dallas area and the website Wormspit.com  was my initial inspiration several years ago when he appeared on the HGTV show That’s Clever.  (I seem to have lost the link to the video clip.)

Michael has a wonderful article in this edition of the magazine Spin Off.  It doesn’t talk about card weaving but about his other hobby…. raising silk worms!  If you get a chance… grab a copy.

The Things We Do… Free, Easy Card Weaving Patterns

PaintedEggsReunion2009

And who we do it for. All in all it’s been a busy week.  My father’s family is having the annual Family Reunion this weekend and I have been busily painting these eggs for the auction held on Sunday afternoon.

SnailMushroomClock

This clock design is my DSH (dear sweet husband)’s design.  This is a prototype and he wanted my little snail and mushroom painted on the pendulum part… so I did.  This will be finished this afternoon.

TWDoubleSidedTwist1

In the evenings I have been working on my card weaving.  This is a 4 card, 2 color weave with 2 cards for the edging.  They are strung with one color in 2 holes and another color in the other 2 holes.  Very easy set-up.  It is woven with only 2 turns forward, 2 turns back and makes a narrow band that is one color on the top and another color on the bottom.  This pic shows the blue on top (and my Cheerios cards…lol).

TWDoubleSidedTwist2

This picture shows the other side of the band.  This is white .  I have twisted the cards and band to show the other side.  With some more practice I will hopefully be able to use this technique to make whatever alphabet or design I want on the band.  Or it can be used to do brocade work on the plain band.  I could really get excited about this..lol

For the other tablet weaving junkies out there here is a site that has many…easy and not so easy… patterns.  I found them easy to read and easy to follow the directions.  I love this site.. Thank you, thank you, Eve the Just, for the time and effort you have put into this site.

Mama’s Round Afghan

MamasRoundAfghan I found a leaflet pattern for a round baby blanket that I thought was lovely.  I increased the size of the needle and bought inexpensive yarn at Wal-Mart and began to crochet it.  It grew and grew until this is how big it got…queen size.. lol  I gave it to my mother for Christmas that year… 1989.  Since that time it has been on her guest bedroom bed until two weeks ago.  That’s when it came back to me.

I had a parakeet while I was crocheting this.  When it became so big that with each round the edges would sit on the floor waiting for me to crochet to them…my parakeet would run as fast as his little legs would carry him and run up the afghan, onto my shoulder and then onto the top of my head…lol  I laugh every time I think of him.  My oldest son and my youngest son each made special trips to Wal Mart for more yarn.  Each of my grandchildren except Hannah has played on it, had diapers changed on it and wrapped up in it.  I had it on my bed when I stayed there in nursing school.  And I will never forget Mom’s eyes when she opened it up on that Christmas.

Many people will ask me “Why do you ….. (sew, crochet, spin, knit, naalbind, card weave, embroider, etc)… Don’t you know you can buy those things?”…..  There is not a thing I could buy that would carry the memories that this round afghan carries…. And that’s my answer….

Snail/Mushroom Quilt Finished

SnailMushroomQuiltDone

I finished the Snail/Mushroom Quilt a couple of days ago and I have to say I’m happy with  it.  This was the first quilt that was quilted with a quilting foot on my machine and boy-o-boy…was that great.  Hannah’s quilt was about this size and it took me a couple of weeks to quilt it with the needle and thread.  This was done in about 3 hours!   There will be more of these quilts.

DPNRoll

Over on Mish Mash…etc  I blogged a bit about trying to learn to use the quilting foot. The piece of fabric I was quilting was about about 18 inches square.  When it was made into a book cover, it seems I measured wrong and it was too small.  Well… here it is in a life… I can’t for the life of me figure out what took me so long to make one of these dpn rolls.  It works so well at keeping everything tidy and at hand.

ApronReversibleDone08032009

Also finished…reversible apron.  I don’t think I will be making any more of these.  It seems very heavy for some reason and I really don’t like the way it hesitates with the drape.  But… for catching grease splatter and wiping my hands… it’ll work just fine..  ;o)

Son and daughter in law coming in two weeks…  I’m still trying to de-clutter the house and my work room.  It’s coming along well and things are looking up.

Have a good day…

Snail/Mushroom Quilt Block is Coming Along

Snail Quilt PatternThere are a few things in life that seem to just resonate within one’s soul.  I guess this little snail snuggled up underneath the mushroom has always done that for me.  He has been a staple in my little artistic doodles for a long time.

The block is finally taking shape.  The a/c was turned on, temp dropped down to shiver, all the mess was cleared out and work began in earnest yesterday.

SnailBlockInProgress09172009

After the pieces were cut from the fabric, small pieces of left over quilt batting were used to pad most of the pieces.  Each piece was cut to fit it’s particular piece of the pattern.  I considered just one large piece of batting and decided that would not work…some of them I did not want padded.

snailmushroomquiltblock2072009

I am wishing that I had used a small floral or some other pink than the plaid…but alas…too late now.  The dark brown will be nodes on top of the mushroom; the light brown will be rocks in front of the grass….

I have spent an hour or so today figuring what the other blocks will be to  to a complete a quilt of 96 “x 118″.

Another good thing happened today as far as my workroom is concerned.  We gave away the extra refrigerator/freezer that was out there.  It came in very handy a few years ago around the holidays, but since we only have family visit every several years (enough to warrant using that fridge), we felt like it just drained too much electricity .  Anyway, now there is more room and some more rearranging can be done…woohoo..!!
