Sunbonnet Sue Bonanza! And a wonderful lady in the bargain.. ;o)

I’m a Sunbonnet Sue fan even tho I’ve never made a Sunbonnet Sue quilt.  And every time I go to Healing Heart and Hands I make myself a new promise to do just that.. make myself one.  Not only are there over 2,500  quilt patterns here, the site belongs to a lovely lady named   Michele Bilyeu.   Michele is very active with charity quilting.. especially the The Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative … but here’s the site where she can tell you herself.. ;o)

You will find hundreds of patterns and links to patterns besides Sunbonnet Sues.   And then there’s the Liberated Quilting…  If you don’t know what that is, don’t worry.  I didn’t either..lol  However, I find that I like the idea.  It’s much like Crazy Quilting in that there seem to be no rules.  Sort of.  ;o)

Grab a cup, lean back and browse through the hundreds of patterns here.  And don’t forget to leave a note and tell Michele thanks for all the kindness..

Have a wonderful day.  ;o)

Cable Needle Ring… Tute (I love mine!)

This is another of those things that I found online several years ago. I made one and let it set in my knitting box for years.  I cannot tell you where I found because I really don’t remember.  If you have any idea who came up with this wonderful idea I would love to know and give them the credit they deserve.

I’ve used cotton yarns to knit dish cloths and face cloths for my nightly knitting to the point that I have about 30 stacked away in drawers.  I do love the plain garter stitch ones to use as face cloths.  They are so soft on my skin that I seldom use anything else.  However, there are only so many plain garter stitch ones a person really wants to do.. ;o/   I decided that these wonderful small projects would be good to try new things… hence the cables.  After losing my cable needle a of couple times down the side of my chair, I decided to dig out this little ring and see if it works.

I love it.  No more fear of cables.  Just wish I had pulled it out sooner.   The picture above shows how the ring is used.  Very practical and easy.

The picture on the left shows the finished dish cloth.  The beginning of the cloth is at the bottom.  This is the practice for  making the cables front to back.  The upper part of the cloth is practice making the cables front only.  I can’t believe how much this little ring made a difference in how I feel about knitting cables.

Making one is as easy as measuring your finger.  Mine is 2 ½ inches around.  I wanted the ring to  ½” across.  Here’s what I did.

1.  I cut a strip of fabric (I used cotton) about 2 ½” long by 1 ¾” wide.  This time I used fabric ribbon.  The selvages are tight and it’s woven closely.  The grosgrain ribbon would make a good ring, but for the purpose of this tute it didn’t work out very well.. ;o)

2 I folded the cut piece in half lengthwise and pressed it with my iron.

3. I opened it back out flat and then I folded the edges back to the fold line in the middle and pressed each side.

4.  For this ring, I used regular sewing thread to make my cord for the buttonhole.  Crochet thread, yarn or any other cord of the right size would also work for this.  I sewed the two ends of the cord together, placed them to the inside of the folded ring and sewed it very well to the end of the ring fabric.  Then I continued to sew along the end, the side and the other end to completely sew the ring together.  I did this with a needle and thread (please don’t look closely at the stitches..lol) because it seems the electric cord and foot pedal for my sewing machines decided to stay behind.. I guess they just didn’t want to leave!  This is much faster with a sewing machine.. ;o)

5.  Now I placed the ring around the finger that I wanted to use it with to decide the button placement.  I marked where I wanted the button with a pen.

6.  By sliding the needle with the thread still connected through the center of the fabric ring and coming out again at the mark I made for sizing, I continued bye sewing on the button with no cutting of my thread.  This step you may want to do differently.  You can certainly fasten your thread firmly, cut it and then come back to the mark to place your button.  Either way, the button needs to be very securely sewn on.  Voila’…

You now have a Cable Needle Ring…

If you decide to make one of these, please let me know.  It would be nice to see if anyone else finds these as useful as I do.. ;o)

Have a wonderful day.  The sun is shining here in North Texas and temps are in the low 50s.  Still not too bad for this time of year.   Thanksgiving is coming up soon and here’s wishes for everyone to have a lovely day with family and/or friends.. ;o)

Cross Stitch Fan? … Free Patterns

I receive the email newsletter from the e-magazine  Cross-Stitching.com .   This is a great site for anyone who enjoys cross stitching and wants to keep up with what’s happening in the cross stitching community.  I’m always on the lookout for free patterns and believe me… they have some really wonderful ones.

This sampler is one I did for my son and his partner for Christmas one year.  It combines a verse from a card that I received in the mail and several small free patterns that were found in different places.

Let me say here that I am in no way associated with this e-mag.. ;o)   But I really do enjoy getting their newsletter and visiting their site.

Hope you day is filled with fun things to do..

Embellished Travel Tissue Cover… Free Pattern

I’ve made tissue covers before but never with the embellishments I used in several of my other projects.. like this needle book…  When I found this pattern by Suzanne Surfass I decided that the plain jane ones I’ve been making were ok, but… I really want to do one of THESE…

The pattern is free and gives straightforward instructions, but remember… with crazy embellishment you never have to slavishly follow instructions.  If you would rather do machine embroidery over those seams…go right ahead.  If you prefer ribbon roses where she has beads…go ahead.  That’s the beauty of crazy embellishment.

We have some of that HOT Texas weather back but all in all… it’s like the guy at check out at Brahm’s said yesterday.. “At least it’s not in the 100s!”   And I shut right up!  ;o)

Have a wonderful day.. ;o)

The Sporadic Packrat… Real Flower Fabric Postcards…

The Sporadic Packrat  shows us how to use real flowers in our hand-made Fabric Postcards.  They are truly lovely and I personally would LOVE to get one in the mail.  I didn’t want to cabbage onto one of her photos without asking and really wanted to tell you all about these today,  soooo… I just used a photo of one of mine.

While you’re over there ogling her FPCs,  click on her me,me,me page.  I think you’ll be glad you did.

It’s spring out there in our part of the country.  If you have flowers blooming anywhere around you… now is the time to pick them, stick them into your dictionary between two paper towels and press them into beautiful pressed flowers you can use in your own floral fabric postcards.   And besides.. it’s a lovely time to be out for a stroll.  ;o)

Bunny Hill Designs… Free BOM is here!

I love Bunny Hill Designs.  There… I’ve said it…  I know… some people just hate applique, but not me.  I enjoy the pieced block with the pretty little designs and flowers on it.  It’s very easy to come up with your own, but sometimes someone has already come up with just the designs you like.  That’s how it is for me with Bunny Hill Designs.

There are 4 patterns out for this year and you can find them here…on Bunny Hill’s Free Pattern page.

Have a wonderful day!

Kantha Embroidery

Kantha embroidery was highlighted on Sharon Boggon’s blog, now called Pin Tangle,  a couple of years ago along with a discussion on the autobiographical elements and symbols in embroidery.   At the time I did a little online research and found myself a bit amazed at what beauty can be made from this simple running stitch embroidery.   I had no idea the simple running stitch could be sewn to form many intricate designs…

The Kantha – Stitches page of Sasha has many more photos and stitch patterns… all of them lovely.  This is where the inspiration jumped up and put a spell on me for my embroidery of the little clothesline on my tea towel.

Sasha is a non-profit marketing page for craftspeople all over India, but there is also a considerable amount of information about these crafts.

Have a look… and have a good day. ;o)

I have a lot to tell you about this month…

but I cannot do it right now. Old friends and reunions will be taking up my time for several days..but now I have a laptop that I can take with me…so perhaps we can share.. ;o)

And… I was looking for something to do with a needle the other day and here’s what I came up with… hemming flour sack tea towels and embroidering them with regular sewing thread….

This stuff sews like butter.. I love it.  I have threatened to go buy some more and make myself an overshirt or something.  Love it, love it, love it.

This is a free hand drawing that I worked up trying the Kantha method of embroidery…

Must go for now. More on the Kantha tomorrow.. ;o)

Crochet and Crazy Quilt

I find myself with LOTS of crochet thread.  The thought ran through my mind the other day to try that thing I’ve always thought about… crochet a table cloth.  So… out came all the pattern books…patiently went through each one… 5 times.  I picked up the #7 hook and some white thread and tried out one of the squares for a lovely table cloth and immediately pulled it out.  Using same hook I went back to the tried and true, trusted doily book and voila’….  we have a doily.   I realized that it would be a very easy crochet to do the table cloth.. and then I realized that I have about 14 projects already started.   So.. against my impulsive desires .. I put the idea on the back burner for a while and pulled out…

My crazy quilt that I started last year and have not touched since I put it down during the holidays.  I know this will be a long-term project, so I decided to finish this before I start another one.

Have I told you about this quilt?  I decided that this quilt will be a memory quilt of our yard and the time that we have lived here.   Leaves were picked from every tree.  I spread acrylic paint in several colors across the back of the leaves and then pressed them in different areas on the quilt.  Pieces of the fabric are from drapery valances.

Then I found some bird appliques at JoAnn’s and some butterflies that came off a little doo dad that I’ve had for about 15 years or so to show the kinds of birds and butterflies.   The needle tatting was learned while living here so I’ve put several pieces of that on it.  There will be embroidery of things of importance that have happened here… knowing full well going in that it will be impossible to put everything on it.  But it will be fun and a good journal anyway.. ;o)

Hurricane Hermine made an appearance here yesterday and the night before.  Hwy 75 was blocked for 6 hours last night because an electricity pole was pushed over onto a truck during a tornado/downburst about 3pm yesterday.  I can’t even imagine a 6 hour traffic jam… ughh  We continued under a tornado watch until 1 am, but I’m afraid I was spending most of the night up and down feeling rather poorly … so that watch went unheeded for the most part.   Today the sun is shining and I haven’t checked the radar to see what’s up for today.  We really needed the rain, but the flooding downtown always causes some to have to be rescued… as was the case yesterday.  But as long as no one is injured… all’s good.

Have a good day today… smile lots and get a lot of smiles in return… ;o)

Prairie Cottage Corner has Sunbonnet Sue… New Free Pattern

Sunbonnet Sue and Overall Sam have been consistently the most popular posts on Fabric Follies Two… with the exception of the Free Crochet Patterns.  A comment on another post led me to the website of Prairie Cottage Corner .   Kathy asked me to check it out… I love it!  She has created new Sunbonnet Sue patterns and offers 19 new project patterns in her shop with most of these having multiple Sunbonnet Sue and Overall Sam patterns.
